Social Security’s revised medical criteria for evaluating cardiovascular conditions took effect October 30, 2026, the first full revision since 2006. The rule adds listings for aortic valvular disease, cardiomyopathy, and cardiac allograft vasculopathy, and updates criteria for heart failure, ischemic heart disease, peripheral artery disease, and congenital heart disease. It applies to new applications, pending claims, and continuing disability reviews for both SSDI and SSI. SSA states that not meeting a listing is not, by itself, grounds for denial. People with a heart condition who have pending claims may want to review their medical records against the new criteria and speak with a benefits advisor. SSA can be reached at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778).
