Medicare open enrollment is underway. A KFF analysis found that about 74% of Medicare Advantage enrollees could be denied a Medigap policy because of a pre-existing condition if they leave Medicare Advantage for traditional Medicare, and the share is 77% among enrollees under 65. People under 65 usually qualify for Medicare through SSDI. Federal law does not guarantee them the right to buy Medigap, and about 38 states require insurers to offer at least one policy to them. KFF notes the figure likely understates the problem for people with disabilities, because many conditions do not appear on Medigap applications. Before switching plans, compare coverage and ask whether you could return to your current option.
