Air Travel: Flight Attendant Wheelchair Training Requirement Paused as October 2 Deadline Passes

A federal rule had required airlines to begin annual hands-on training for flight attendants on helping passengers who use wheelchairs reach the lavatory using an on-board wheelchair, starting October 2, 2026. The Department of Transportation has paused enforcement of that training requirement, along with four other protections for wheelchair users, until April 2027 while major airlines challenge the rule in the 5th Circuit. Other Air Carrier Access Act protections remain in effect. Travelers who use wheelchairs can still file complaints with DOT when a mobility device is damaged or assistance is not provided.
