A new national survey from ANCOR finds that 85% of disability service providers experienced moderate or severe staffing shortages in the past year, and 55% declined new referrals as a result. Nearly 3 in 10 providers cut back programs for people they already serve, and 48% are considering further cuts.

The pressure is expected to grow as roughly $1 trillion in Medicaid reductions approved by Congress take effect, since Medicaid is the primary funder of HCBS for people with developmental disabilities. Families on waiting lists or seeking new services should ask providers and state agencies about expected wait times and keep documentation of their requests.
